家族を、友人を、同僚を失ったニューヨークの人たちが、深い悲しみの果てに辿りついた１万２千人の平和デモ。そこに至るまでの道のりは民主主義の原点をみるようだった。

抗議する人々

2002年9月11日午前8時46分、学生や通勤前の人々が次々と、ユニオンスクエアのアスファルトのうえに横たわった。

１年前のその時間に発生した同時多発テロの犠牲者と、米軍の攻撃で死傷したアフガニスタンの人々を悼んでの「ダイイン」である。そこには戦争への抗議もふくまれていた。

独立メディアの人々

９.１１直後のマスメディアの報道にはうんざり——多くのニューヨーカーが感じていることだ。星条旗、英雄、そして愛国心をかきたてるニュース。しかしこれは９.１１のテ ロ直後に始まったことではない。

戦争報道にメディアの自己検閲はつきものと感じた人々は、国家や企業ではない、自分たちのメディアをつくり、草の根の情報をインターネットをつかって発信している。

情報は国境をこえて世界を駆けめぐる。あなたは行動しますか、沈黙しますか？

On September 11, 2001, some moments after the attack, I happened to be standing by the World Trade Center. During the following month, I continued to take the video of grassroots-New Yorkers converging to the Union Square to express their grief and anger which gradually emerged as one powerful voice against any violent response. This video is the documentary of grassroots-people.

This is Union Square in Manhattan, New York City. After the terrorists' attack on September eleventh, people posted signs of their missing loved ones here.

People opposed to the war took to the streets. News of this grass roots activism spread through the independent media network and the internet. The headline "Union Square Memorial Shut Down" appeared on the front page of the independent news. The City removed the memorials at night, fearing they would become a symbol of the antiwar movement.

Union Square, 8:46 AM September 11th, 2002.
Students and people on their way to work stop to lie down on the ground. The event is a "die-in," held to mourn the victims of the September 11th attack that took place exactly one year prior, as well as the victims of the subsequent US military attack on Afghanistan.

The die-in is also an act of protest against the war lead by the US military forces. Many New Yorkers are tired of what they have seen and heard from the mainstream media following September 11th: stars and stripes, heroes and patriotism.

People who recognized that the media was practicing self-censorship in its war broadcasting turned to the creation of their own alternative, grassroots media. This new media is independent from the state or private corporations, and focused on the internet as a borderless tool that allows voices and information to reach out to people all over the world.
